Guide to enjoy the typical gastronomy in Santiago: Where to eat the best empanadas?

The Círculo de Cronistas Gastronómicos conducted its exciting tasting to define the best empanadas 2023. Do you want to know what they are?

As it does every year, the Circle of Gastronomic Chroniclers of Chile held its exciting blind tasting in search of the best empanadas 2023 in Santiago. This event, which has reached its twentieth edition, has become a long-awaited occasion to pay tribute to the noble and delicious baked pine empanada, undisputed protagonist of the September 18 celebrations in Chile. And to commemorate this milestone, the tasting has been extended to both Santiago and Valparaíso, taking the flavor of empanadas to new heights. Let's get to the point, or to the pine, or to the olive: these are the winners of the best empanadas 2023.

  • La Temucana: With four decades of tradition and its first location located in Peñalolén, this empanadería opens only on weekends. Its traditional clay oven and the freshly baked experience are the details that elevate it to the top. La Temucana's empanada de pino ($2,800) is made with tapapecho pine.
  • Pastelería Tentaciones: The second best empanada this year comes from a Venezuelan venture: Pastelería Tentaciones. With only 15 months of history in Chile, this establishment has left its mark on the gastronomic scene. Betty Guerrero and her husband René, both Venezuelan, lead this project that offers a pine empanada ($2,500) with a crispy dough and a filling that is the result of experience and passion.
  • Los Gansos: The empanadas of Los Gansos, a family business with a history dating back to 1980, are icons in the Estación Central district. Here they create handmade empanadas. Their empanada de pino ($2,400) is characterized by its generous filling, golden and crispy dough, and the dedication with which each ingredient is cut and prepared by hand.
  • Amasandería Rosalía: In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Círculo de Cronistas Gastronómicos Empanadas Tasting, the Típico Chileno Award was introduced, which honors the quality, history and authenticity of empanadas. This award was given to Amasandería Rosalía, whose history spans decades. These empanadas ($2,700) have remained faithful to their original recipe. The dough is worked by hand and the pine is prepared with lean black posta, hand-chopped onion, Azapa olives and blond raisins.

These empanaderías have managed to capture the essence of a classic recipe and present it with a personal touch, reminding us that food is not only a necessity, but also an art form and a connection to our roots. If you want to delight yourself with these delicacies, do not hesitate to visit these places and discover for yourself the taste of the best empanadas 2023.
